How to Open a PSX Trading Account Online in 2026: SECP, TREC, CDC Explained

Zainab Farooq, Broker Relations EditorAugust 02, 20267 min read

Opening a PSX trading account in 2026 is faster than it's ever been. Multiple licensed brokers offer end-to-end online applications you can complete in an afternoon. But behind that convenience is a stack of things retail investors keep getting wrong: choosing the wrong account type, picking a broker with hidden fees, forgetting the CDC step, missing the ATL registration.

This is a practical, step-by-step guide covering exactly what to do, in what order, and what to watch for.

The three things you actually need

Before we get into brokers, understand what a "PSX account" actually consists of. You need three things:

  1. A Brokerage Account with a licensed broker who holds a TREC (Trading Right Entitlement Certificate) with PSX
  2. A CDC Sub-Account or CDC Investor Account (holds your shares in dematerialized form)
  3. A linked bank account for funding and settlements

Most brokers open the brokerage and CDC accounts simultaneously as part of one application — you don't apply separately. But it helps to know the underlying structure so you understand what's happening.

Step 1: Choose the right broker

A good broker in Pakistan checks the following boxes:

  • TREC holder with valid SECP license — non-negotiable, verifiable on the SECP website
  • Reliable online trading platform (mobile app + desktop, uptime during market hours)
  • Transparent fee structure — brokerage %, minimum charges, hidden regulatory fees
  • Good research support — daily reports, corporate action alerts, IPO coverage
  • Reasonable customer service — many retail traders regret picking brokers with weak support
  • Low minimum deposit if you're starting small

Broker categories on PSX today:

  • Full-service brokers: JS Global, Arif Habib, KASB, AKD — higher fees, better research, personal advisory
  • Discount / online-first brokers: iSave (JS), KTrade (KASB), TPL Trakker, Sarmaaya — lower fees, DIY, better mobile UX
  • Specialty brokers: Al Meezan (Shariah-compliant), Aiwa (retail-focused mobile-first), Chase (advisory-heavy)

Compare 3-4 brokers before committing. Fees add up fast if you're active.

Step 2: Choose the right account type

There are broadly three routes:

Sahulat Account

  • Simplified account for smaller resident investors
  • Fewer documentation requirements
  • Lower deposit minimums
  • Some feature limitations (limited product access, transaction caps)
  • Faster onboarding — often approved in 1-2 days

Good fit for: first-time investors, small starting capital (< PKR 100,000), simple buy-and-hold intent

Standard Trading Account

  • Full-featured PSX account for resident individuals
  • All product types accessible (equities, futures, IPO subscription, right issue participation)
  • Requires complete KYC + biometric verification + CDC processing
  • Typically 3-5 business days to activate

Good fit for: serious investors, larger capital, active traders, anyone wanting IPO/derivatives access

Roshan Digital Account (RDA) / Roshan Equity Investment

  • Overseas Pakistanis (holders of NICOP or dual passport)
  • Fully digital onboarding from abroad — no return to Pakistan required
  • Direct forex settlement — invest in USD, get paid dividends net of tax
  • Slightly different tax treatment for non-resident investors

Good fit for: Pakistanis based in UAE, KSA, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.

Step 3: Gather your documents

For a resident individual applying for a standard account:

  • CNIC (front and back), or NICOP for overseas Pakistanis
  • Bank account in your name (for settlements; provide cancelled cheque or bank statement)
  • Proof of address — recent utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement if different from CNIC address
  • Recent photograph (many brokers auto-capture during video KYC)
  • Source of funds declaration (many brokers include this in the online form)
  • Passport-sized photo (some brokers still require)

For overseas Pakistanis:

  • Passport (bio page and address page)
  • Foreign residence proof (utility bill, driving license, or residence card)
  • Foreign bank account to link (or Roshan bank account already opened)

Step 4: Complete the online application

Most brokers walk you through a 6-8 step form:

  1. Personal details (name, CNIC, contact)
  2. Address details
  3. Occupation and income
  4. Bank account information
  5. Upload documents (scans or photos)
  6. Video KYC or biometric verification (many now support this over WhatsApp video call or in-app)
  7. E-signature on account opening forms
  8. Confirmation email + welcome kit

Once submitted, KYC verification usually takes 24-72 hours. The broker will notify you once your brokerage and CDC accounts are ready.

Step 5: Fund the account

Once active, transfer money from your linked bank account to the broker's client bank account (details will be in your welcome email). Most brokers support:

  • IBFT (real-time interbank fund transfer)
  • Online bank transfer (usually same-day)
  • Cheque deposit (2-3 day clearing)

Minimum deposits vary by broker: some start at PKR 5,000, others require PKR 25,000 or 50,000. Verify before applying.

Step 6: Register for FBR filer status (critical)

Before you make your first trade, go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and register. Get on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).

Why: as we covered in our CGT tax guide, non-filers pay double the CGT (up to 30%) and double the dividend tax (30%) that filers pay (15% each). Registering takes 20 minutes and doubles your after-tax return.

Skip this step and you're donating extra money to the government for no reason.

Step 7: Place your first trade

Start small. Recommended first-trade discipline:

  • Pick 1-2 blue-chip PSX stocks (Meezan, OGDC, Lucky, Engro type — companies that won't go to zero overnight)
  • Invest no more than 10% of your funded amount on the first trade
  • Set a target price and stop-loss at the moment of entry (write them down, or better yet use a platform that tracks them for you)
  • Wait 2 weeks minimum before making a second trade — learn how the app works, how orders execute, how settlements flow

Watch out for beginner traps:

  • Do not day-trade with your first PKR 25,000. Day trading is a skill; you don't have it yet.
  • Do not chase penny stocks under PKR 20 — most are illiquid traps
  • Do not use borrowed money or margin
  • Do not put everything in one stock

Step 8: Set up analysis tools

A brokerage app gives you order execution. It does not give you deep analysis. Complementary tools that pair well:

  • PSX Invest — AI-scored BUY/SELL signals, watchlist, opportunity feed for the stocks you own
  • Charting tools — TradingView (free tier works for PSX charts)
  • News tracking — Business Recorder, Profit by Pakistan Today, Dawn Business
  • Company financialsPSX Data Portal for filings and disclosures

Add 5-10 stocks to your PSX Invest watchlist the day your brokerage account activates. The platform will alert you when its AI identifies a BUY or SELL setup on any of them.

Fees and hidden costs to watch

All PSX brokers charge:

  • Brokerage commission (0.15% to 0.5% of trade value, minimum PKR ~25)
  • SECP fee (small, regulatory)
  • NCCPL fee (small, clearing)
  • CDC fee (annual account maintenance)
  • CVT (Capital Value Tax on sales — 0.02% of trade value)
  • CGT (via NCCPL, on realised gains — 15% for filers)

Before signing with a broker, request a full fee schedule and compare on a hypothetical PKR 100,000 monthly trade volume. Small percentage differences add up over a year.

Common regrets from PSX first-time investors

  • "I wish I'd picked a broker with a better mobile app." (Solution: try 2-3 apps on demo/tour before committing)
  • "I didn't register as a filer for 6 months and paid double CGT." (Solution: filer registration is your day-1 job)
  • "I put everything in one stock on tip from a friend." (Solution: minimum 5 stocks across 3 sectors from day 1)
  • "I didn't understand my broker's fee structure." (Solution: request written fee schedule)
  • "I paid brokerage minimums on tiny trades and it ate my returns." (Solution: don't trade positions smaller than PKR 10,000)

Wrap-up

Opening a PSX account in 2026 is straightforward if you follow the sequence. Pick a licensed broker with a decent app, complete KYC, register as a filer BEFORE trading, and start with small positions in blue-chip names.
